How KidSide Helps

Family Court Services

More than 80% of the clients at Family Court Services do not have legal representation. Regardless of the reason, if a client’s emotions are in the driver’s seat when making decisions about their life and their family’s future, it can be problematic.

Sophia, Mother – Testimonial

Sop hia is a 44 year-old mother who has not seen her three children in about four months due to allegations made against her live-in boyfriend. Sophia works for Walmart at a minimum wage and does not have the funds needed to pay to be able to see her children. However, because of the extraordinary services offered at Family Court Services free of charge, Judge Bernstein was able to refer this family for co-parenting with an in- house therapist and supervised visitation.

Ms. Sophia is now seeing her children every Wednesday and is so happy this has been made possible before the holidays. The children are oftentimes overwhelmed with happiness and contentment when Sophia appears on the Zoom call. Family Court Services is helping hundreds of families reunite and build familial relationships. Ms. Sophia and the children’s father are also displaying signs of improvement in their communication. Although they are not where they need to be as co-parents, they are not where they were when initially ordered for services.

Family Court Services is here to keep families connected while going through the judicial process.”

Message from the Judiciary

The citizens of Miami-Dade county are lucky that Kidside and Family Court Services exist. It offers the parents and children in high conflict cases the ability and tools to emotionally get through a divorce and/or separation. We all are aware that children suffer the most in a divorce or separation. They begin to feel responsible for the parents separation and can begin a downward spiral emotionally and educationally. This feeling only gets worse when the parents can’t agree on the most basic parenting decisions. I recently referred a family for services where the parents disagreed about everything and were so busy fighting with each other that they could not understand what their child was going through. During a court hearing, I felt the emotional trauma to the child would warrant the involvement of the Department of Children and Families and would ultimately lead to the termination of parental rights.

To my surprise, after Family Court Services had completed their hard work, the parents made a complete 180 degree turnaround and are now effectively co-parenting and putting the needs of the child ahead of their own needs and desires. It was remarkable to hear, from the parents , the difference that Family Court Services made in their lives and that of the minor child. Without the services provided by the professionals who work at Family Court Services, this case would have ended very badly for the family.

The dedicated professional staff and its volunteers at Kidside and the caring members of Family Court Services do amazing work. They have been nothing less than amazing during this pandemic. Our circuit is leading the rest of the country in helping its citizens through difficult times.
